Young people who get in trouble with the law may face serious consequences that affect them for the rest of their lives. College athletes in particular have a lot to lose. One college football player is facing numerous drug charges.
The Office of University Relations at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, reported that a student was recently arrested and charged with 17 felony counts and one misdemeanor count of drug-related charges. Some of these charges involve the alleged sale of LSD. Officers were tipped off to these sales when they received information regarding a student who was admitted to the hospital after overdosing on LSD.
Court documents indicate that the red-shirt freshman linebacker admitted to earning $375 by selling 39 pieces to 8 different people. The athlete also may also have had possession of marijuana and cocaine at the time. He will be headed back to court in the next few weeks. While the college has yet to punish him, they plan to take these allegations very seriously. According to a William & Mary spokesperson, there are drug awareness programs on campus that students take part in as soon as they start school.
Drug distribution charges can result in life changing consequences, so defending against these charges is in the accused person’s best interest. There are defenses that can be used depending on the situation. One common defense is to show that the drugs belonged to someone other than the defendant. There is also a possibility that the drugs could have been planted or that the drugs may not actually be drugs at all. A crime analysis can be done to prove what the substance in question actually is. While drug distribution charges can be serious, there are many strong defenses one can use to protect oneself from serious consequences.
